“I covered up a previous terrible tattoo with this one about three years ago,” said Shepard, who plays Crosby Braverman.

“In one of my first talks with (Parenthood creator Jason) Katims before I was a member of the cast, I said, ‘It’s imperative to me that I can have the tattoo so I’m not in makeup two extra hours a day.’ And he said, ‘Let’s see it.’ And then he was like, ‘All right.’ ”
So what was the tattoo before it was a tree?
“I hesitate to use the word ‘tribal,’ but other people would have probably used that word to describe it,” Shepard said. “I have a knack for predicting which tattoos will be ‘douchey’ in 10 years.”
